Varieties of a language are not just indicators of the regional and social background of their speakers but can also bear certain connotations and lead to various kinds of associations with speakers of that variety. Such associations are frequently used in literature or in films, for example, to draw a stereotypical (and often cliché-laden) image of a character. In this seminar, we will learn to identify various varieties of English and investigate how and to what effect they have been put to use in literature and film to shape particular characters. |
