What is Linguistics and how does the study of language relate to the real world? Can linguistic findings be applied to practical issues, or is linguistics just a theoretical attempt to better understand language as a means of human communication? Why is there a distinction between theoretical and applied linguistics? In this seminar we shall explore the world of language studies and attempt to go beyond the more traditional view of applied linguistics as a discipline mainly concerned with 1st and 2nd language acquisition and language learning methodology. Pragmalinguistic, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic issues as well as multilingualism, language planning and language maintenance will be discussed in addition to language acquisition theory and other relevant aspects. Focus of our work will be the setting up of a wiki on applied linguistics.
