Television is one of the most important and influential media when it comes to discussing cultural and social issues in the United States. Television shows, even if solely aimed at entertainment, always echo the times and the society in which they were produced. One of the key aspects of many television shows is the question of gender and gender roles. Therefore, in this course we will look at a number of American television shows, between the 1950's and today, that are exemplary in this respect. Studying theoretical texts on television in general, the role of audiences, the negotioation of gender and gender roles, we will determine changing ideas of masculinity/femininity as well as gender and gender roles over the past six decades. A reader for this course will be available from the copy shop, Reckhammerweg 4, by the beginning of April . |
