This lecture, which is accompanied by a one-hour Übung (also compulsory!!!) is an intensive introduction to the academic study of literature. It is designed to give an overview of the major periods and movements of British and American literature, to introduce students to the field of postcolonial studies, to provide students with the critical vocabulary and basic tools of literary analysis and to familiarize them with some of the main currents of contemporary literary theory. Students are expected to copy the reader (available in the copyshop “Unser Kopierladen”, Reckhammerweg 4, in early October) and to buy the following textbook prior to the first session: Michael Meyer, English and American Literatures. 3. Aufl. (Francke, 2008). In addition, they are expected to buy and read William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (Arden Edition!!!). The final exam (obligatory, 90 mins.) will cover both lecture AND Übung. |
