The English language has an estimated one - two billion speakers world wide. Millions speak English as their first language, many more as their second language and an ever increasing number as a foreign language.
As the boundaries of these various evolving categories are not clear-cut, this course will examine the spread of English in its historical development and linguistic variation across global varieties with “standard” and “non-standard” features.
