This seminar will explore the political, cultural and literary developments in Britain during the long 18th century. The ideas and ideals of Enlightenment philosophy as well as the conscious return to and appropriation of Greek and Roman literature and culture by 18th century writers will serve as a broad contexts for all texts and topics discussed. One focus of the seminar will be the consolidation of the party system following the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1689 and the struggle for political supremacy between the Whigs and the Tories which overshadowed the better part of the time period. In this context, the appearance of periodicals such as the Tatler and Spectator attests to the close connection between politics and literature, which will also be a central concern. In addition to this, we will delve into 18th century poetry. With its emphasis on satire and mock-heroics, the poetry of the period is likewise intimately concerned and intertwined with the political scene. A reader containing the relevant primary and secondary texts will be available at the Copyshop Reckhammerweg at the beginning of the semester. |
