Traditionally, grammars of the English language have taken the written language as a benchmark for what is correct and standard. In the last few years, corpora of spoken English have enabled a detailed description of the grammar of spoken language. In this seminar we will have a look at what is specific to spoken grammar and at explanations why spoken grammar differs from written grammar. Another question we may touch in this context is whether it is reasonable to have two different grammar books – one for spoken English and one for written English. |
