Aaron, Iago and Richard can be said to form an „unholy trinity“ in Shakespeare’s plays. All three rejoice in their mischievous actions, they love to evoke and watch the downfall of their unsuspecting enemies – all are excellent manipulators, actors on the stage of „life“ and highly gifted rhetoricians. They are the driving forces of the main plot of all three plays – though only covertly, and they all get into direct contact with the audience thereby making them their accomplices. The understanding of the theatrical/psychological/theological traditions that help to establish these evil persons on stage may contribute to a deeper appreciation of the plays and even of cultural notions and concepts of the nature of evil.
