Psychoanalysis and literature have a number of contact points: Psychoanalytic thought is part of literary criticism, supports the examination of what happens in a reader's mind, and a long line of novels show that Freudian thought is also part of the writing process. In this seminar, we will work with a number of novels, published in Great Britain and the USA between 1914 and 1996, that are built on psychoanalytic foundations. We will focus on literary characters whose inner realities are based on psychoanalytic concepts, the plots involved, and the narratological presentation of these elements. This is a seminar for avid readers – be prepared to tackle the theoretical background as well as a number of novels, partly complete works, partly excerpts. Please buy your own copies of the following novels: - May Sinclair, The Life and Death of Harriett Frean, London: Virago 1980
- D.M. Thomas, The White Hotel, London: Phoenix 1981
- Angela Carter, The Magic Toyshop, London: Virago 2008
To familiarise yourself with the theoretical background, you could have a look at the following texts: - Gérard Genette, Narrative Discourse: An Essay in Method, Cornell UP 1983
- Matias Martinez/ Michael Scheffel, Einführung in die Erzähltheorie, München: Beck 42003
- Sigmund Freud, Vorlesungen zur Einführung in die Psychoanalyse, Frankfurt a.M.: Fischer 1977
- Pamela Thurschwell, Sigmund Freud, London: Routledge 2000
A reader containing theoretical texts as well as excerpts from a number of novels will be available in Unser Kopierladen, Reckhammerweg, when the semester starts. |
