The classical detective novel is surely one of the most popular literary sub-genres. Its well-known pattern will make it easy to find out common basic features of narrative, investigate specific techniques of role playing, settings, logical deductions and track down strategies of (not only) textual dissimulation, intertextual references, and witty allusions. The seminar will first focus on two "classical" works of Agatha Christie's in order to then sleuth more recent parodic developments. As we have two novels and two plays there is also an opportunity to learn something on dramatic/narrative genre conventions. All texts must be read before the course begins. Novels: A. Christie, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, 2006 and G. Adair, The Act of Roger Mugatroyd, Faber & Faber, 2006 Plays: A. Christie, The Mousetrap, Signet 2000 and Tom Stoppard, The Real Inspector Hound, Grove/Atlantic 1998. |
