New York City is not only the United States' biggest city, it is one of its most famous as well. Envisioning the busy urban canyons of Manhattan, it is hard to imagine that New York City, one of the world's most iconographic metropolises, started out as a small colony of Dutch settlers in the 17th century. Within less than 300 years the city grew enormously and quickly turned into the capital of social life, art, trade and politics. Until today, New York City is considered the Eastern gate to the land of unlimited possibilities and connector between the Old and the New World. In this seminar we shall examine New York City as one the world's most popular as well as iconographic film settings. The genres of examined films range from romances to science fiction. Due to the enormous amount of films set in New York City we cannot examine all films and therefore will concentrate on a survey of several topoi - from Cinderella stories to September 11, 2001 - connected to "the city that never sleeps." A reader containing all course texts will be available at the copy shop located at Reckhammerweg 4 after the first class meeting. |
