From protests against racial segregation in the mid-1950s to contemporary heated debates on same-sex marriage rights, America has witnessed and continues to witness struggles for equality. Whether with the Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Liberation Movement or Gay Liberation, these ‘revolutions in America' have played an integral role in shaping not only policy but also social discourse. However, do these distinct movements have more than just broad intentions in common? Or are their approaches to social change and revolution more than superficially similar? By examining these three movements and the social discourse surrounding them, this course seeks to uncover potentially ‘American' strategies behind civil rights struggles. |
