The central aims of the course will be to introduce students to the diversity of the people and culture of the American South and to provide students the opportunity to delve deeper into specific issues through writing and oral participation in class. The South is generally seen as a unified Cultural Region typified by conservatism, agrarianism, religion, racial conflict and a somewhat outmoded sense of propriety and gentility. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, including history, literary texts and other media, we will explore other dimensions of the South and its people, questioning certain prejudices, while examining the representation of the region in certain works and how this has tended to solidify certain images of the Southerner and his region. |
