"What is an Author?" (Foucault, 1969) In this seminar, we will examine one of the most important theoretical and critical terms in literary studies. Roland Barthes' proclamation of the death of the author (1967) seems to have rekindled the interest in literary authorship. We will discuss the changing definitions and concepts of authorship and trace the birth, death and resurrection of the author. Moreover, we will explore the concepts of ownership and censorship and analyze author theory in the context of debates over historicism and feminism.
