The lecture aims to give an overview of the diversity of English studies as such and as practised at the University of Duisburg-Essen. It will introduce major English-speaking regions today, from Great Britain via the USA to post-colonial countries such as South Africa and Australia, highlighting their cultural, linguistic and literary characteristics. A look backwards as far as the Middle Ages will help to illuminate the precursors of modern culture and language. Finally, a section will deal with the ‘everyday' applications of theory, from intercultural communication to the teaching of English The lecture concludes with a final in-class test. |
