Computer Corpus Linguistics is an indispensable part of modern linguistic research. The availability of huge collections of (written and spoken) language in use within computerized data-bases (i.e. corpora) offers a wide range of application. Concordance lists and corpus samples provide insights into real language use for theoretical researchers as well as language learners. In second language learning, working with authentic texts will prepare learners for the kind of language they will encounter in real life situations. This seminar will provide an overview of the theoretical background of corpus linguistics, its fields of application and its computer tools. Additionally, we shall look at different kinds of corpora and how they can be used in language learning and theoretical as well as practical research.
