Course Description: In this course we will read and analyze classic tales of the American fantastic by Poe and Hawthorne. We then take a look at the creator of supernatural horror: H.P. Lovecraft. Afterwards we will discuss Vineland, a ‘classic' postmodern text, which uses features of the supernatural and fits them into the age of television. Last, we might take a look at David Lynch's and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks, an example of employing the fantastic in television. Requirements: - Reading the assignments.
- Handing in four response papers. Due February 12, 2010.
- A short presentation in class. A list of topics will be available at the office of Ines Fricke-Groenewold or from me at alexander.greiffenstern@uni-due.de.
