English language learning and teaching at primary level is currently a much debated topic in EFL-Methodology. Recently, criticism has been voiced regarding the relevance of English at primary level. The aim of this course is to provide future secondary school English teachers with the materials and skills needed to cope with the demands of young secondary learners with prior English knowledge. In order to motivate their pupils and build upon existing language skills, teachers have to introduce new learning and teaching methods. Based on fundamental theories of second language acquisition, key questions of primary language learning, as well as the results of current research conducted within this field will be discussed. Additionally, we will take into consideration the “Lehrpläne” as these are the guidelines every teacher has to follow. By comparing textbook examples for primary and secondary learners, we will analyse and find out whether they complement each other. Short in-class reports will form an integral part of the course work. Course Readings: A course reader will be available at the beginning of the semester. |
