Exactly 350 years after the Restoration of 1660, this seminar aims at an advanced-level discussion of language, literature and culture in the "Short 17th Century" (1603-1688). We here also attempt to bridge the traditional gap between literary and cultural studies and linguistics. Potential areas to be explored include: - central texts and authors of 17th-century literature and their language (Milton, Bunyan ...)
- literature and science and their respective languages
- literature and theological controversies
- 17th-century print culture, censorship and strategies of evasion
- changing thought-styles, linguistic styles, text types and registers
- attitudes to language and its ‘perfection'
- the intellectual legacy of the English Revolution
A reader with suggested texts will be provided, but participants are expected to take an active role in shaping the course of the seminar. |
