Forensic Rhetoric provides a specific technique of accusing and defending - not only in court, as we all know, but also in literature, film as well as in everyday life. Situations where someone or something - e.g. living conditions, political systems, or religions - are adamantly defended or relentlessly accused form an integral part of our cultural experiences. The underlying technique of this communicative situation is provided by rhetoric, which has been defined since antiquity as the art of speaking well. The first - shorter - part oft he course will give an introduction to the history of rhetoric as a system and some of ist principles and structures. The second part will be devoted to analysing some outstanding examples of „trials" in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Richard II, The Winter's Tale, and Julius Caesar. In a third - creative - part students will be expected to transform rhetorical theory and literary analysis into practical performance, i.e. self-written forensic speeches are to be delivered in front of the class which then will be scrutinized collectively. A reader will be available in „Unser Kopierladen", Reckhammer Weg at the beginning of March. |
