In the course we will try to understand the development of the 19th- century „vampire" as a tremendous and fascinating figure in literature mixing such sombre ingredients as undead death, strong/ perverse sexuality, (post)eternal love, bloodthirst and destruction. Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) will provide rich material for a reading - both aiming at scrutinizing the literary techniques as well as the cultural implications. Analysing two 20th- century examples of filmic translations - Murnau's Nosferatu (1922) and Coppola's Dracula (1922) - may hopefully show as a further development of the vampire concept which could hint at/help to understand the most recent, highly successful but nearly hysterical revivals in this area.
