Ever since Edward Said's Self/Other theory, the question of identity has been prevalent not only in Postcolonial Studies but in Literary Studies in general. The creation of an individual's identity is only one of many points of investigation. One main question that will be at the centre of Cultural Identities is how far culture and heritage influence a person's identity. Is their authority inescapable or does the individual in fact have the freedom of choice? By analysing and discussing how the novels White Teeth, Possession, Brick Lane and The Remains of the Day answer these questions, we will elucidate the complexities of cultural influence and identity formation. The following versions of the novels are recommended: Ali, Monica. Brick Lane. London: Black Swan, 2004. Byatt, A.S. Possession. London: Vintage, 1990. Ishiguro, Kazuo. The Remains of the Day. London: Faber and Faber, 2005. Smith, Zadie. White Teeth. London, New York: The Penguin Group, 2001. Students are strongly advised to take notes (questions, comments, possible answers) on text-passages concerning culture and identity in the novels. This will materially help build a foundation for the mandatory work assignments and discussions in class. The course requirements are: regular attendance, active participation in class discussions and the completion of the mandatory work assignments. |
