The 20th century is a century that entailed groundbreaking revolutions in the literary world, from the Modernist period to Postcolonial Theory and Gender Studies, moulding and re-shaping the definition of both literature and text, the author and the reader, leading to the diversity in approaches and readings that are prevalent today. The seminar will not only familiarise students with crucial writings of 20th century British Literature in prose, drama and poetry, but also analyse modernist, post-modern and contemporary writings from Great Britain and discuss texts that represent the so-called New Literatures in English. Apart from the selected texts that can be found in the ‘Semesterapparat', the required texts are: Cisneros, Sandra. The House on Mango Street. New York: Vintage Contemporaries, 1984. Friel, Brian. Translations. London: Faber and Faber, 1981. Rushdie, Salman. East, West. London: Random House, 1998. Woolf, Virginia, To the Lighthouse, London: Penguin, 1964. Students are advised to read at least two of the required texts before the semester begins. The course requirements are: regular attendance, active participation in class discussions and the completion of the work assignments (mandatory). |
