Current thinking in SLA methodology favors knowledge construction rather than simple instructivist learning as an appropriate approach to language learning. Therefore, the integration of content learning into language learning as well as a more task-oriented approach to classroom practice are often referred to as appropriate current paradigms for language learning. In addition, the cultural has been added to the communicative when defining the overall competence of what language learning should help learners to achieve. In this seminar we shall look at the theoretical underpinning of such approaches as well as their practical implementation via TBL & PBL, i.e. task-based and project-based learning. We shall also consider ways of putting learners into a position where they can develop a deeper understanding of the linguistic and cultural specifics underlying the target language as well as strategic competencies through models of learning which emphasize information processing. We shall also look at samples of classroom practice where learners play the role of active constructors of knowledge. |
