Aims: The course aims to advance the knowledge of students in the origins, structure and functions of Japanese social and political institutions. Students will become competent in the analysis of major aspects of institutional development and change in Japan, and on this basis, qualify for advanced study of Japanese politics and society in the modules The Japanese Society and The Economic Sociology of Japan. For students who will not focus on sociology or politics of Japan, or who have a focus on China, the course provides a firm interdisciplinary foundation for the regional studies curriculum. Expectations and Evaluation: Students are expected to attend the course regularly, and to complete an estimated three hours of preparation per week, which mainly consists of reading the required texts and preparing to comment on the texts in class. Students will be evaluated on both their classroom participation and a final examination, based entirely on the readings, lectures and discussions: In-class participation comprises 50%, the final examination 50% of the course grade. A passing grade is the basis for the awarding of course credits. Course Materials: After the first session, students will be invited to a course folder on the university BSCW server, for which a valid e-mail address is necessary. All required readings for the course will be posted on the server, and students are expected to download and print these materials themselves. |
