Political correctness is in everybody's mouth and we all think we know what it means but its meaning is constantly shifting. In the course of this seminar we will investigate the origins and the implementation of political correctness into contemporary culture, which might at the same time be idealistic as well as ridiculous. While its origins are grounded in respect for difference and sensitivity, political correctness has not only fulfilled its intended purpose. It has silenced genuine issues as well as it has provoked satire and parody. Focussing on the historical, semantic and cultural aspects of political correctness, we will carefully research this thought-provoking topic and examine its impact on public life.
