In this course, we will be investigating some of the many pathways linking a nation's culture to its humour, with a special focus on the ways in which its language is used to express these two fundamental facets of a country and its people. We will focus on aspects of Britain's culture and language as represented in film and television and will analyse these with a view to contemporary theories of humour as well as in contrast to non-British productions. A reader will be made available and film/TV material will be suggested, and any contributions and ideas about material to be used are strongly encouraged. |
