Bleak, industrial, proletarian and grim are some of the common adjectives people use to describe northern England. In this seminar we will hopefully discover that there is more to the North than just chimney stacks, working-class men with their whippets and windswept hills. Together we will explore the image of the North through text (dialect writing, industrial novels and regional novels), film and music. We will also discuss how the northerners see themselves and are seen by the southerners. Students are expected to actively participate in class and sit a final exam. A reader will be available from the copy shop (Ewald Priebe, Segerothstr.81) after the first session. |
