This seminar will be concerned with modern forms of the English language throughout the continent of Asia where it is found as a native language, a second language and a foreign language. Particular countries will be looked at in detail to see who English developed there. Among the countries will be India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (South Asia) on the one hand and Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines (South-East Asia) on the other. The role of language contact is important here as the background languages of speakers has an effect on the type of English they speak. The function of English in the public life of the countries of Asia will also be considered.
