When hearing the term "Renaissance", we all think about William Shakespeare first. However, there are indeed a great number of poems and plays dating back to the Renaissance which were not written by Shakespeare. These are often neglected in discussions on the Renaissance.
In this seminar, we will of course have a brief look at some texts by William Shakespeare. But we will spend the greatest amount of the semester on those writers who are not Shakespeare, but nevertheless prove to be fascinating. We will try to put these writers and their texts into their cultural landscape; thus the seminar also attempts to familiarize students with the epoch in general. What the seminar hopes to achieve, is to provide an overview of one of the most important epochs of British literature in all its literary diversity.
A Reader will be available in the copy-shop "Unser Kopierladen" Reckhammerweg from early April onwards. Furthermore, students are asked to buy their own copies of Ben Jonson, Volpone, or the fox (any edition will do) and Christopher Marlowe, Doctor Faustus (preferably the New Mermaids Edition based on the A Text, edited by Roma Gill, 2008, available at amazon.de)
