This course is an obligatory part of the Grundstudium for students studying to become teachers. Each week students will be asked to read an on-line module and its content will then be discussed, reviewed and expanded in the following classroom session. A number of videos will also be critically examined to promote reflection and discussion on current methodological approaches to teaching EFL. The main aim of the course is to give you an insight into central theoretical aspects of foreign language learning and teaching.and to encourage you to develop your own principles and ideas. To achieve this aim we will be analysing your present beliefs about language teaching and learning and possibly call some of them into question

  • by taking a closer look at the mental processes of first and second language acquisition and differentiate between the underlying theoretical assumptions
  • by making ourselves familiar with all kinds of (psychological, educational, social, political etc.) factors that determine the language learning and teaching process in the classroom
  • by reading about and discussing some of the latest developments in teaching English as a foreign language
  • by considering new and alternative ways of organizing and stimulating classroom interaction
  • by watching videos to observe how teachers go about their job
  • by familiarizing ourselves with the many sources which are available for English teachers.

Active and regular participation is expected and students are required to complete assignments punctually and to the required standard.
