"Hooray for Hollywood, where you're terrific if you're even good!" Synonymous with the American movie industry, Hollywood, and all it stands for, is an essential part of American cultural history. In order to gain a deeper understanding of how the movie industry influenced U.S. culture and politics - and vice versa, during the first half of the 20th century, we are going to have a closer look at the "Golden Age" of Hollywood and the Studio System between ca. 1910-1960. We will talk about the power of the studio executives and the stars; about the political and cultural developments at particular times and how they can be traced in movies of the time. What impact did sound have on the movie industry? How did Hollywood support the war efforts of the United States during WWI and WWII? What types of censorship did the movie industry have to cope with and how did the creators of films try to bypass it? These and other topics which will be discussed in class, will give us a scholarly understanding of the significance of the movie industry for U.S. history and culture.
