We will further investigate Victorian attitudes towards and representations of convicts and migration to Australia as displayed, e.g. in Dickens's David Copperfield as well as Victorian paintings. In the latter part of the semester we shall analyse Jack Maggs, contemporary Australian author Peter Carey's postcolonial re-writing of Dickens's novel. Texts: - Charles Dickens, Great Expectations (Penguin pb)
- Peter Carey, Jack Maggs (faber pb)
