Language can be studied, and has been studied, in many different ways. This seminar looks at the major schools of linguistics in the American and European tradition up to the present day. You will get to know the fundamental ideas behind big names of 19th and 20th century linguistics, such as Humboldt, Jespersen, Sapir, Saussure, Austin, Bloomfield, Greenberg, Labov and Chomsky, to name but a few. Abolishing the idea that language can be approached in one way only, we will look at the great inventory of ideas which, together, have led to important achievements in the study of human language.
