Newspaper articles provide snapshots of our life and our culture. We will look at the national British press for examples of the language of newspapers covering the three categories: the broadsheet newspapers (the Telegraph, the Independent, the Times and the Guardian), the middle-range tabloids (the Express and the Daily Mail) and the tabloids (the Sun, the Mirror, the Star).
The term newspaper suggests that the genre is primarily concerned with news when, in fact, as we will see, a substantial part is dedicated to comments and analyses, advertising, entertainment and sport. Our analysis of newspaper articles will include the composition of news stories, their headlines and discourse, as well as the audience addressed and groups that are represented in the texts. We will see how these texts present and, to some extent, influence aspects of British culture and society.
