In this seminar we will analyse the contribution made by women writers to the definition of political and imaginative liberty in the Romantic period. Recent research into women’s writing has radically altered the traditional map of Romantic literature, raising new questions about the gendered nature of aesthetic experience and the relation between history and ideology. We will of course talk about the more “famous” women writers of the time but will also spend time on their less-know contemporaries. Key themes of the course may include the following: Writing and Revolution, Private and Public, Individual and National Liberty, the Political and the Imaginary spheres, Sexuality and Romantic freedom, Gender and Nationalism, Reason and Sensibility, Gender and Genre.
A reader will be available in the copy-shop on "Reckhammerweg" at the beginning of the semester. However, please get hold of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, preferably the Penguin Classics edition: ISBN 978-0141028095) |
