As with many other nations, Scotland has had to live with its fair share of stereotypical imagery. do the Scots really eat porridge for breakfast, fried Mars bars for lunch and have an evening meal of haggis, neeps and tatties washed down with whisky and Irn Bru? Do they all wear kilts, play the bagpipes and toss cabers in their free time? What do they think of their Sassenach neighbours south of the border nowadays? In this course, we will explore the notion of ‘Scottishness’ in modern Scotland through texts (among other things, tartan noir/ crime fiction), film and music. |
