Marlowe’s famous play brings forth topics like ethnic stereotypes, the nature and psychology of evil, morals and politics –all this enwrapped in the rhetorical and poetical conventions of a stark theatrical performance and its notation. In contrast to this “overreacher” Grimes’ 20th- century detective novel shows us the cosy environments of tourist attraction Stratford upon Avon, peopled by specialists in English Renaissance literature, members of the aristocracy, a Scotland Yard inspector and American admirers of British civilization. Yet, the method and purpose of the extremely cruel and complicated murders, which overrun this friendly place, can only be deciphered through a solid and - sometimes at least, rough pragmatic knowledge of the golden age of English literature.
