In this course, we would be exploring the foundations of Englishes in a colonial setting and of their subsequent development into varieties of their own. In doing so, the often complex socio-historic contexts which have facilitated language contact between the input varieties and the native languages will be scrutinized.
Interested minds will be also encouraged to examine additional external factors that were of influence; namely the acquisition planning strategies implemented by the colonial administration in South Asia - policies that have left a lasting influence on individual and societal language usage to this very date.
