This course will provide you with hands-on experience with methods for collecting data on language. We will especially but not only look at language in its social context, e.g. participant observation, surveys, sociolinguistic interviews, subjective reaction tests. We will also have a look at traditional surveys such as the Wenker Atlas and the Survey of English Dialects but also at the recent Atlas of North American English.
After theoretical issues have been discussed in the first few sessions you will have the chance to collect and analyze linguistic data yourself. |
