Description

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become a very interesting field of research and a very promising approach that is used more and more in schools on different levels (primary, secondary as well as vocational) in Germany, Europe and beyond. Recent studies seem to confirm it as a valuable addition to more traditional programmes of language teaching.

The aim of this course is to explore important principles of CLIL. In addition to theoretical backgrounds, the course focuses on implications for teaching and actual teaching practice. We will discuss different models of CLIL, potential benefits, advantages and challenges. Aspects of curricula and various materials for primary and secondary schools will also be explored: We will carefully examine existing textbooks and evaluate them according to the theoretical knowledge we gained beforehand. On this basis, we will finally set out to take matters into our own hands and design some teaching materials ourselves.

Assessment will be based on in-class participation and various tasks that have to be completed throughout the semester. Further course and assessment details as well as additional information on required readings will be supplied in the first session.
