In the history of mankind there has hardly been any other taboo as fervently upheld as the incest taboo and yet as often challenged and questioned. A wide-ranging variety of literary texts approached this topic and employed it as a recurrent element in their narratives, often resulting in controversies and scandals.
This seminar will look into the theory of taboo and incest, briefly discuss relevant texts from different epochs and focus on contemporary narratives and a film.
A comprehensive reader will be made available and can be purchased from the copyshop 'Reckhammerweg'. Students are asked to buy A.S. Byatt's 'Morpho Eugenia' and Ian McEwan's 'The Cement Garden'. |
