This course will be exploring in more depth some of the topics which were covered in a more general way in the survey of British Culture seminar in module 5. Additionally, we will be paying special attention to the following three areas which are of particular interest to the lecturer (and hopefully students!): *The impact of geographical location and historical events on the development of Liverpool *The challenges Britain faced and still faces in the post-colonial and globalised world *Britain in the grip of consumerism and trash culture Throughout the course we will be continually asking ourselves why things are the way they are in Britain. The topics we look at and the approaches we take should provide us with some interesting and thought-provoking answers. These answers will be articulated in the form of an exam essay at the end of the semester and in a homework assignment. Active, regular and intelligent participation will also be required throughout the course. |
