This course is for Diplom and MA students wishing to do research on topics in the fields of political science, political economy or sociology of Japan. It covers all major methodological issues that students will have to deal when compiling a thesis and introduces the main types of methods used in the social sciences. Based on examples from electoral politics, welfare research and class sociology, participants will learn how different methods can be applied to achieve scientific rigours results. Depending on participants' interests and preferences, some topics can be done in more detail or changed. It is also possible to present own research ideas and discuss how they can be developed into a Diplom/MA thesis.
Apart from discussing different methodological approaches and selected studies, the course will also cover issues concerning time management and layout as well as ways of stress-free bibliography management.
