To date, the region of West Africa belongs to the most deprived areas in the world. More than 60 years after independence from colonial rule, the different countries from within the region face a variety of developmental challenges. Alongside social, ecological and economic trends, the seminar will focus on the political dimension of development in West Africa. We will work out the peculiarities of polities and politics in the (West) African context and have a close look at the state and recent trends in democratisation. The seminar aims at identifying roots and roadblocks of democratisation thereby taking a critical perspective on different notions of democracy and its linkages to development. Moreover, the influence of regional initiatives as well as external actors on governance issues is taken into account in the course of the seminar. |
