Who are British Asians? Is there one single identifiable British Asian culture? And how can this complex topic be taught in the English language classroom?
This course will not only provide students with a general overview of the history of migration, the British Asian cultures, but will also look into current issues.
British Asians have migrated to Britain from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and form an integral part of the British population. Thus, when speaking about British Asians, it's also important to consider the religious diversity ranging from varieties of Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism as well as the different languages.
A variety of films, three novels, as well as a collection of short stories and other texts will all serve as a basis for showing different aspects of British Asian reality with compassion and freshness.
Students who would like to participate in this class are required to read the following texts prior to the course:
- Irfan Master (2011): A beautiful Lie.
- Bali Rai (2001): (Un-)Arranged Marriage.
A reader will also be provided.
