"I have a dream ...", "From rags to riches", "The American Dream"..... From the time of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, the term ‘America' has been synonymous with the New World, the land of opportunity for all those who came. The wish of the first settlers to establish America as a shining example to the rest of the world and their values and beliefs came to be called the ‘American Dream' and has become a catchword to describe all that is or seems to be typically American. Critics of American society have been quick to point out those phenomena they see as contributing to the American Nightmare: poverty, racism, lack of cultural values, etc. In this course we will use a variety of texts, films, TV shows, documentaries, cartoons and pop culture to explore the concept of ‘the American Dream' and its implications for ethnic and social diversity of the USA and we will develop a broad range of learner-centered activities, which are involving for learners. A reader will be available from the copy-shop in Reckhammer Weg. |
