Linguistic typology is the study and classification of languages according to their structural characteristics (phonological, grammatical, lexical). In this seminar, we will be looking at human languages from a global perspective, including the West Germanic language family which comprises both English and German. Our goal will be to acquire a sense of a) linguistic properties that are shared by various, maybe even all, languages, as well as b) the great diversity of the world's languages. Additional scenarios to be discussed are situations of language contact, the spread of major world languages such as English and Spanish, but also the fate of much smaller, endangered linguistic communities, and language death.
The course is open to all students who have passed the Introduction to Linguistics.
