The study of dialects has been in the spotlight of linguistics for a considerable time, and it is still flourishing. In more recent years, the discipline has been strongly influenced by sociolinguistics. It is nowadays acknowledged that, besides the spatial dimension, there is an important social dimension to the use of everyday speech. This new attitude has brought about the rise of urban dialectology, focusing on the way that language functions in the large and complex systems we call 'cities'. In this seminar, we will take a look at different cities in the Anglophone world and elsewhere, and we will investigate the multiple factors that influence city talk, such as migration, social background and identity. The course is open to all advanced students.
