What is "urban culture"? What functions does it have? How can we classify its different manifestations? What is the role of "urban cultural studies" in interdisciplinary urban research? Working with an extremely broad definition of "urban culture" to include not only "established" forms of urban culture such as museums, music, drama and other performing arts, but also on popular forms of cultural expression such as graffiti, tattoos, urban installation art, guerrilla gardening etc., this seminar will explore the theory and practice of "urban culture" in a very general sense.
A reader containing key theoretical texts and case studies will be available in the copy-shop Reckhammerweg from early July onwards. Please note: Since there will not be enough time to do the required reading during the week of the seminar, students are required to have read ALL texts in the reader by the beginning of the seminar. There will be a reading test.
I look forward to a productive working week.
